The Food Bank of York Region (formerly called LifeCorps (Līf-Kōr) Food Share) is the only charitable refrigerated collection and delivery service in York Region. We collect and deliver food for community food pantries, agencies and non-profit housing cooperatives throughout the nine municipalities in York Region (Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, King, Aurora, Whitchurch/Stouffville, East Gwillimbury, Newmarket and Georgina)

We collect surplus perishable and non-perishable foods from food retailers, food manufacturers, food distributers, farmers, the Ontario Association of Food Banks, Food Banks Canada and individuals across the Greater Toronto Area.

The Food Bank of York Region is a program of LifeCorps International. LCI began operating in Guatemala in 2004, assisting in the construction of a health care facility to bring quality health care to a population of northern Guatemala that had limited adequate health care. Since the inception of LCI, working at home was always a major goal.

In 2011, that goal was realized when a bakery in Aurora, Ontario allowed LCI exclusive right to their “End of Day” inventory of nutritious bread and tasty sweets. LifeCorps Food Share was born, now called The Food Bank of York Region. We quickly found Agencies in York Region that gladly accepted the bread donations on a weekly basis.

Months after the bread pick-up and delivery program was underway, LCFS (now called The Food Bank of York Region) started accepting and delivering non-perishable consumables to eight community food banks in York Region.

For the first time in York Region’s history, the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) regional allocations and offerings were being distributed in York Region. Prior to LCFS, these OAFB offerings were redirected elsewhere since there wasn’t an organization that would accept and distribute these products.

We provide food to our clients on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. In March of every year, Canada Food Banks conducts their “Hunger Count” survey. This survey allows clients to participate in offerings and allocations from the Ontario Association of Food Banks that is distributed by The Food Bank of York Region. Through the OAFB, clients are also eligible to participate in other programs including their Gleaning Program, Bulk Buying Program, and fresh Milk Program.
