The Food Bank of York Region (FBYR) is a registered Canadian charity committed to providing hunger-relief to people experiencing food insecurity. Our services are centred on the collection and distribution of food to a network of 80+/- non-profit agencies, including local food banks and pantries, schools, shelters, and social housing cooperatives.
In September of 2011, a new bakery in Aurora, Ontario required a charity to pick-up and distribute their “end of day inventory” to the hungry. Our directors accepted the daily challenge. After one week 15 agencies in York Region signed on, and a food program was born. Since that time, our program has continued to grow as the need in our community also grown.
In 2018, the Ontario Trillium Foundation provided funding for the purchase of our first refrigerated cargo van, walk-in combination chiller/freezer, and the leasing of a warehouse. The Food Bank of York Region (FBYR) currently serves community food pantries, social service agencies and social housing in Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Whitchurch/Stouffville, King, Aurora, Newmarket, East Gwillimbury and Georgina.
With faith and perseverance, we will continue to grow our capacity until there is no more hunger in York Region.
Feed Ontario (formerly the Ontario Association of Food Banks) is a network of 130 direct member food banks and over 1,100 affiliate hunger relief agencies.
Food Banks Canada supports a network of provincial associations, affiliate food banks, and food agencies that work at the community level to relieve hunger.
